Suttanipāta, (Pāli: “Collection of Discourses”), one of the earliest books of the Pāli canon (where it appears in the late Khuddaka Nikāya [“Short Collection”] of the Sutta Piṭaka).It is one of the books most quoted in other Buddhist writings, and it serves as important source of information on early Buddhism and its cultural and religious milieu. The Way Things Really Are is translation of Book IV of the Sutta-Nipata by Lesley Fowler Lebkowicz, Tamara Ditrich and Primoz Sutta-Nipata is one of the earliest texts of the Pali canon, coming from the same period as the Dhammapada, before the monastic tradition was was created by people as they practiced and refers to “the wise one”, rather than to monks or nuns.
The Suttanipāta, or “Group of Discourses” is a collection of discourses ascribed to the Buddha that includes some of the most popular suttas of the Pāli Canon, among them the Loving-Kindness suttas are primarily in verse, though several are in mixed prose and verse. The Suttanipāta contains discourses that extol the figure of the muni, the illumined sage, who wanders homeless. The Sutta Nipata consists of verse and prose passages celebrating the path to enlightenment discovered by the Buddha, a wisdom that speaks to us even today.
